For the 4th assignment, Danny has done a great job emulating jungle sound.
The drums are, of course, the most crucial part of the song, and he nails them. The beat, created from the break in Bobby Byrd’s Hot Pants, sounds like it is ripped straight out of a Goldie song. The sample choice is perfect. It gives the tune just enough funk. By altering the pitch and pushing the sample through a mutating filter, Danny gives the drums the requisite dose of future-punk.
The vocal samples were great. The shout from At The Drive-In hits at just the right moment, as the drums reach a crescendo. Of course, the sample has been manipulated so much that it sounds more like an effect than a human voice. Meanwhile, i’ve never heard a scarier jimi hendrix. His upper frequencies have been filtered out, leaving jimi’s lower register bellowing, ‘anger.’
The muted guitar sample essentially replaces the vocals at the end. An excellent choice, since leaving everything in would have made it too cluttered. I do wish that the sample had more movement to it, but that may be a complaint about the genre more than the piece. As is, the guitar is sent through a distortion box, which steadily ramps up until the sample has become little more than rhythmic pulses of noise. It certainly fits the genre. and, come to think of it, it sounds really cool too.
